To Face My Poetry

I can see the poetry in your face

I can feel the water in your eyes

I am in no position to know your tears

I don’t know your song, but am familiar with the tune

You have sung this before

You have stood on your knees in my room

You said you talked to god

I asked you to talk to me

And there was this way your mouth fell to the floor

Where I picked it up and put it back on your face

That is when I saw my poem starting at your chin

Coming up to look me in the eyes

And tell me that it was time, that this is the time

To know, to know what it is I am in these words

To know who I am in this cloud of smoke that surrounds life

I can see you in the mist, your cheeks flushed

Reminding me of how embarrassed I am to be alive

In a world that does not recognize my face

I look in the mirror to know who you are

And I see my own sadness in the reflection in your eyes

Where I see myself floating between me and you

I am somewhere in the middle of our existence
