All in the Modern Family

My dad's favorite show from the seventies was All in the Family and Threes Company. Let's talk about All in the Family for a minute shall we? All in the Family was about a completely racist man, his obedient wife and his hippie daughter and of course 'meathead.' It was about America moving from Archie Bunker to something a little more elevated. Speaking of moving on up, remember the Jeffersons? Good old George and Wheezy, and the maid, what was her name?In this day and age, would it be so funny that Archie Bunker was a racist asshole? What would gay people think about the fact that Jack was pretending to be gay on Three's Company? And what was Three's Company about? It was about Jack, a guy who wanted to get into every woman's pants, including the women he was living with. The blondes that went through that show were always ditzy except for Terry, who was kinda smart. Jack was always the sensible one, the man. Janet was kinda smart too, but she had to be, she wasn't that pretty or blond. I mean Suzanne Summers character ChrissyAnd then there was Janet. How many of us have felt like a Janet? Pretty, but not pretty enough to be noticed around someone like Suzanne Sommers. But I think the man who really made that show was Mr. Furly. Those outfits were priceless. Orange printed with yellow, jumpsuits from the seventies. Every 'misunderstanding' that happened on Three's Company had some kind of sexual undertone. But it was done with such innocence that my parents would let me watch it when I was a kid. What they would not let me watch was The Love Boat and Fame. You guys remember The Love Boat? Everyone went to bed with everyone. And then there was Fame. One of the first real shows out there. It was about real struggling performing artists. It was raw and brilliant. But my absolute favorite show was 21 Jump Street. Yes, Johnny Depp at his best.Remember Thursday nights? The Cosby Show, Family Ties.Cheers, Dallas, ERThe comedies of the nineties were all overshadowed by one show: Seinfeld. A show about nothing. No lesson at the end, no story wrapped up with a bow.
