Can Lipstick be Good for You?

This is the purply every day lipstick I was looking for!

So I went to the mall today and I was looking for a particular color of lipstick at Sephora. If anyone is actually interested it was a purply everyday shade. I first went to this store called Morphe where they had a fantastic selection: two lipsticks for 16 dollars. Which in my world is really good for lipstick. I put the two lipsticks on hold and then went to Sephora, a high-end make-up store. Although I will note that both of these stores were at one of the most expensive malls in Michigan.

Sephora brand stuff is cheaper than all the brands and it’s just as high quality, I personally think, it’s like ten or so dollars for a lipstick. But as I said I was looking for a particular color and this woman at the brand called Bobbie Brown got a hold of me and gave me this lipstick that was “good for your lips with moisturizing qualities.” It was 42 dollars.

Afterward, I talked to my single white straight male friend, whose two cents was, “There’s no reason to be buying a 42-dollar lipstick ever!” So I asked him, what if you were married to someone who wanted to buy a 42-dollar lipstick? Because the truth is I have in the past bought a 42-dollar lipstick.

I like what she's done with her lipstick!

I like what she’s done with her lipstick!

He said everyone has a personal budget, if she decides to buy a 42-dollar lipstick that’s 42 dollars that month she shouldn’t spend on other things. Every now and then we all have something we spend a lot of money on, just know your limits. We will take this with a grain of salt because he’s a man and some men still think the only lipstick color that exists is red.

But honestly, I kind of agree with him, I spend 45 dollars or so on foundation so my skin stays good and doesn’t break out. My male friend I was speaking to earlier spends extra money on shampoo that keeps him from balding. We all have our vices we all just need to know our limits.

So I took that 42-dollar lipstick to the checkout line and thought about it for a minute, the 8-dollar lipstick I had put on hold was almost the same exact color. I gave the 42-dollar lipstick back to the cashier and didn’t buy it. I went back to the other store and bought two lipsticks for 16 dollars.

I’m not sure what my point was, but I really don’t think that the lipstick that cost 42 dollars is any better than the other lipstick that cost 8 dollars. The reason that I spend more money on foundation is that my skin health is important to me.

I’m very proud of myself for realizing that I don’t need to spend 42 dollars on lipstick. Why don’t I just go to the drugstore and get make-up? I don’t know if you’ve been to the drugstore lately but it’s the same price as many products that you can buy in a store at an expensive mall.

So the moral of this story is that no matter how good they tell you the lipstick is for your lips, it’s nothing a little dollar store chapstick can’t do.
